Updated: Jan 29

The Cambridge Floorball Club is excited to announce the return of the Powerhockey Division to the Oxdog Open for a second consecutive year, thanks to their continued partnership with Powerhockey Canada. This collaboration has helped make the Oxdog Open one of the most inclusive and dynamic floorball tournaments in North America, offering a unique platform for athletes of all abilities to showcase their skills.

What is Powerhockey?

Powerhockey is a fast-paced, adaptive version of floorball designed for individuals with physical disabilities. Played in a similar format to traditional floorball, Powerhockey gives athletes who use power wheelchairs the opportunity to engage in a sport that emphasizes teamwork, strategy, and skill. Players use their power wheelchairs that allow them to move freely and compete at a high level. Powerhockey combines the excitement of traditional floorball with accessibility, allowing athletes to experience the rush of scoring goals, blocking shots, and playing as a team.

The sport is typically played with slightly modified rules to accommodate the use of wheelchairs, but the essence of the game remains the same: fast action, quick decisions, and the thrill of competition. With its inclusive approach, Powerhockey offers a unique way for individuals with disabilities to stay active and connected to the floorball community.

A Winning Partnership

Last year, the Cambridge Floorball Club took a bold step by adding the Powerhockey Division to the Oxdog Open tournament, in collaboration with Powerhockey Canada. The response was overwhelming, with players and spectators alike praising the integration of the Powerhockey division into the larger floorball event. It was a defining moment for the tournament, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and showcasing how sports can bridge gaps and bring communities together.

For 2025, the partnership between Cambridge Floorball Club and Powerhockey Canada has been extended, ensuring that Powerhockey continues to be an integral part of the Oxdog Open. Both organizations are committed to promoting adaptive sports and providing a competitive and supportive environment for athletes of all abilities.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Powerhockey at the Oxdog Open

As the Oxdog Open continues to grow, there is a shared vision between the Cambridge Floorball Club and Powerhockey Canada to expand and develop the Powerhockey division further. In the coming years, we can expect even more teams, higher levels of competition, and increased visibility for the sport.

The partnership between the two organizations is rooted in a commitment to providing opportunities for athletes with disabilities to compete in a sport they love, while also educating and inspiring others about the importance of adaptive sports. Together, they are working to build a more inclusive future for floorball in Canada and beyond.
